Prospect Heights school welcomes veterans

MacArthur Middle School invites all veterans and their families in the Prospect Heights Elementary District 23 area to come for breakfast.

The event is at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, the day before Veterans Day, because school is not in session on the holiday.

Veterans who served either during wartime or in peace are asked to respond by Nov. 4 to (847) 870-3879 with their name and the number of people they are bringing.

The festivities will include an introduction of the veterans, talks by eighth graders and music by the school band, choir and orchestra.

All veterans who live or work in the area or are relatives of students are invited. The district includes parts of Prospect Heights, Arlington Heights, Wheeling and Mount Prospect.

McArthur students study the different U.S. wars and the history of Veteran's Day, said Principal Steve Lee. They also do fundraising throughout the year to pay for the food and decorations for the breakfast.

"The kids need to see what a veteran is so that they can understand why we honor them on Veteran's Day and why we have the freedoms that Americans enjoy," he said.
