Police: Wheaton man threw snowball at cops
Police say a Wheaton man's wish to spend Christmas in jail was granted after he threw a snowball at an officer's squad car.
It happened in unincorporated Plato Township in northwestern Kane County, the sheriff's department reported Wednesday.
About 10:25 p.m. Dec. 25, a patrol officer came upon a vehicle creeping west on Russell Road with its emergency flashers going and a man walking alongside. When the officer asked if there was a problem, the man ran into the road and began flailing his arms.
He then picked up a chunk of snow and threw it at an approaching, fully marked squad car, and yelled, "If you don't arrest me, I'm going to punch you," a police report said.
Michael W. Lopez, 22, of the 1000 block of Briarbrook Drive, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and assault, both misdemeanors punishable by up to 30 days in jail.
Police noted no force was needed to take Lopez into custody, but once he was in the car he started screaming and banging his head against the window.
The driver of the other vehicle told police Lopez was kicked out of a holiday party earlier that night after he had too much to drink and tried to start a fight with a relative.
He posted $100 bond and was released with a Jan. 20 court date.
