Bartlett 67, Glenbard West 64

In a back-and-forth game in the second quarter Tuesday night someone had to make a play -- or plays.

Bartlett's Luke Labedzki was that someone.

Labedzki went on a personal 7-0 run and turned a 1-point deficit into a 6-point lead. The Hawks never trailed again as they advanced to the Class 4A East Aurora sectional championship game with a 67-64 victory over Glenbard West.

"We had to get the tempo back and our confidence up," Labedzki said. "It got my confidence up. We got pumped up as a team."

Bartlett (22-7) set a school record for wins and advanced to its second sectional title game. The eighth-seeded Hawks will play either No. 2 Waubonsie Valley or No. 6 Neuqua Valley at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Waubonsie and Neuqua play tonight in the other sectional semifinal. Both teams beat Bartlett earlier this season.

Glenbard West (16-13), the No. 13 seed, led 22-21 with 1:40 left in the second quarter after Northwestern-bound John Shurna scored two of his game-high 33 points. Twenty seconds later, Lakedzki hit two free as Bartlett regained the lead. After the Hawks' Cory Hrynyk missed a free throw and the Hilltoppers grabbed the rebound, Lakedzki intercepted an outlet pass and nailed a 3-pointer with 58 seconds remaining. The sophomore then stole the ball near mid-court and went in for an uncontested layup with 35 seconds left to give the Hawks a 28-22 lead. It would be 28-24 Bartlett at halftime.

"I told Luke before the game that this was going to be his night. I could feel it," Bartlett coach Jim Wolfsmith said. "He had a good night.

The Hawks increased the lead to 8, 32-24, as Kamil Janton and Mike Selvaggi each scored in the opening 40 seconds of the third quarter. Glenbard West cut the deficit to 3, 36-33, on a 3-point play by Shurna with 4:22 left in the third. Janton, who is 6-foot-9, picked up his third foul on the play. He was whistled for his fourth foul with 2:34 to in the third and had to sit down. Shurna, a 6-8 senior, then had to be guarded by the smaller Cory Hrynyk, who is 6-5.

Shurna quickly scored after Janton went to the bench to again make it a 3-point game, 38-35.

"I thought I had him at the beginning when I didn't have any fouls," said Janton, who came back into the game 2½ minutes into the fourth quarter but did not guard Shurna. "He gets the ball every time so it's hard not to pick up some fouls."

Then it was Lakedzki who got the Hawks going again. He hit a 3-pointer with 2:20 left. A steal would lead to a Hrynyk bucket. Then Lakedzki, who finished with a team-high 21 points, nailed a 3-pointer from the left corner and was fouled on the play with 26 seconds remaining in the third quarter. He hit the free throw to give the Hawks an 11-point lead, 48-37.

The Hilltoppers scored the final 4 points of the quarter as Bartlett led 48-41 heading into the final quarter.

Bartlett, which controlled the tempo most of the night, hit its first nine free throws of the fourth to maintain its lead. Shurna, who scored 15 points in the fourth quarter, made it a 5-point game, 64-59 with 33 seconds remaining with two free throws. Marc Little's pair of free throws with 27.2 seconds remaining again gave Bartlett a 7-point lead, 66-59. Shurna grabbed an offensive rebound and scored. Shane Bryant stole the in-bounds pass and Bryant Venson hit a 3-pointer with 96 seconds left and all of sudden it was only a 66-64 lead for Bartlett. Little hit 1 of 2 free throws with 6.7 seconds left to make it a 3-point game.

Shurna got a decent look at a game-tying 3-point attempt from the right wing over Little, but missed. Venson got the offensive rebound, but could not get a shot off.

"It was as good of a look as I was going to get," Shurna said. "It wasn't easy. You have to find a way to get a shot off. I got a look at the basket. It didn't fall."

Shurna added 14 rebounds and 5 blocks. Venson was the only other Glenbard West player in double figures with 11 points.

Lakedzki scored 17 of his 21 in the second and third quarter. He also added 5 rebounds. Little finished with 14 points. Hrynyk and Frankie Cleope each had 10 points. Janton contributed 8 points and 5 rebounds.
