Hartmann Park's outdoor ice rink ready to open

The Vernon Hills Park District has recently installed an outdoor ice rink at Hartmann Park. The grand opening of the ice rink this weekend will feature valued community partners the Chicago Wolves Hockey Team, Glacier Ice Arena and Culver's of Mundelein.

Community Relations Coordinator Marty Walsh tells us what you need to know.

Q. What makes this event so fabulous?

A. The event is completely FREE, and is ideal for both kids and adults.

Q. How long has this event been in existence?

A. This is our official grand opening of the ice rink.

Q. What's the highlight of the event?

A. In addition to free skate rentals from Glacier Ice Arena and free hot chocolate from Culver's of Mundelein, there will be a special appearance at 3 p.m. by Skates, the official mascot of the Chicago Wolves hockey team.

Q. What kind of activities will appeal to kids and families?

A. Both kids and families can take advantage of our free skate rentals. Kids will also be able to take pictures with Skates.

Q. What about adults? What does the event offer them?

A. Moms and Dads are welcome to take advantage of the free skate rentals. We will also have Hartmann Pavilion open for those who would like to warm up inside with some free hot chocolate.

Q. What kinds of food and beverages will be for sale?

A. Culver's of Mundelein will be providing free hot chocolate, while supplies last.

Q. Tell us about the volunteers and organizers who pull this together.

A. This has truly been a communitywide effort. Jeff Fougerousse, the park district's executive director, has been integral in the development and installation of the ice rink. He met with representatives of the Chicago Wolves, Glacier Ice Arena and Culver's of Mundelein in order to turn his vision into a reality. With the support of area businesses and the commitment from park district staff, this new outdoor ice rink truly represents what can be accomplished through community partnerships.

Q. Is there anything else we should know?

A. Throughout the winter, Glacier Ice Arena will be providing complimentary skate rental every Saturday and Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m., weather permitting. The ice rink will be open for skating daily until 9 p.m.
