Fox River Grove village bosses charged in building scam
Two high-ranking Fox River Grove village employees were arrested Wednesday, accused of buying construction material for a personal home project and billing the expenses to village accounts.
Daniel Hughes, superintendent of water and sewer and John Reese, assistant superintendent of streets and parks, were arrested by McHenry County Sheriff's police.
Both men were charged with two counts of official misconduct, while Hughes also was charged with two counts of attempted theft of government property.
Hughes and Reese bouth construction materials and piping to affix a city sewer line to Reese's newly built house, Sheriff Keith Nygren said in a news release.
Hughes then allegedly placed a work order with a nearby supply company in Barrington and charged the items to the village, the sheriff's release said.
When Hughes received the invoice, police said he submitted the bills for payment under the Water and Sewer Department as water line maintenance.
In addition, Reese rented an item from a local hardware store and charged the rental to the Streets and Parks Department. The bill was then posted to the Water and Sewer Department, where Hughes approved and submitted it for payment.
