Elburn's Day in the Park features new children's pavilion
In Elburn, the good times are not over after the fireworks on Independence Day.
Celebrate the 11th annual Day in the Park from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday at Lions Park, 500 S. Filmore St., with sports, live music, a new children's pavilion, food, the usual good fellowship and fireworks at dusk.
"We're expecting another great show," said volunteer coordinator Leslie Flint. "We're excited to do this for the community."
Flint said turnout was excellent last year despite the heat. She is hoping that weather conditions will be more favorable this year.
New this year is the children's pavilion, provided by the Community Congregational Church of Elburn.
There will be carnival games and crafts for children from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the South Pavilion. The church will also sponsor free "low tech" games for the younger children from 2 to 4 p.m.
"These are games that don't require batteries," said Linda Miller, church secretary. "Like bean bag toss, ring toss and drop the clothespin in the bottle."
There will also be a coloring table and registration for vacation Bible school.
Children fascinated by large machinery will enjoy the touch-a-truck program from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the southeast baseball fields off Stetzer Drive. Touch-a-truck is also new this year. Children will be able to climb in, touch and have their picture taken in some of their favorite vehicles, including fire trucks, ambulances and snow plows.
Denise Klock of Farmers Insurance Group will be at the pavilion registering children for the managing information on lost kids (or m.i.l.k.) child identification program. Klock provides parents with a digital photo that can be imported later into another CD that will also store other identifying information. The CD is kept on the family's home computer, and the service is free.
Day in the Park wouldn't be complete without the chance to play in the sports tournaments. There is coed volleyball, 3-on-3 men's and women's basketball, and a bean bag tournament.
This year's entertainment includes headliner band "Flippin' Pennies," as well as "Head First" and "Quagmire," all rock bands. Music begins in the afternoon with "Quagmire."
The celebration will wrap up with fireworks at 9:30 p.m.
Day in the Park is sponsored by the Elburn Chamber of Commerce. For registration forms or information, visit the Elburn Chamber of Commerce Website at www.elburn.com, or call (630) 365-2295.
