Incumbent, newcomer strong choices for critical days ahead

At a time when community colleges are the economical choice for many, the next steps McHenry County College takes are crucial. The board has two 6-year seats open.

Finding a new college president in the wake of the recent abrupt retirement of Walter Packard is a priority for incumbent Mary Miller. She also would push for more accessibility through satellite campuses and online courses. Miller, a CPA, has skills to find creative ways to finance future projects while keeping the budget healthy. Newcomer John Darger believes in selling the college's mission to the community. His political involvement in national campaigns and ability to network locally are strong assets. He would be an advocate for and inspiration to young students.

Also running for the first time is Ron Parrish. He co-founded PROMISE, a program that offers free tuition at MCC to every high school graduate who gives meaningful service to the community. Parrish is a board member of the MCC Foundation, a position he would keep if elected. We encourage him to continue in that vital role.

We endorse Mary Miller and John Darger.
