Glenbrook South 21, Stevenson 14

Glenbrook South quarterback Ryan McGrath is entering his third season as varsity starter, but he said that his best play might have come Friday night game Stevenson.

McGrath found junior wide receiver Trent Monckton on a hitch, and Monckton took it the rest of the way to complete a 51-yard touchdown pass to give the Titans the lead for good in their 21-14 win.

"That was the biggest play of the year," he said. "It was the best play I've seen so far, maybe the best of my career."

McGrath threw for 2 touchdown passes, the first coming on South's second play from scrimmage, a 36-yard connection to tight end Devin Henderson. For the night, McGrath was 16-for-25 for 216 yards and 2 interceptions.

"He's the kind of quarterback anyone would like to have," Glenbrook South coach Mike Noll said. "We left a lot of points on the board, but he still made the plays when we needed to."

McGrath's counterpart, junior Zach Wojcik, enjoyed a solid evening as well, completing 12-of-26 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown. Wojcik's 42-yard pass to Mike Bilton tied the game at 14 with 5:40 left in the game. Wojcik also helped engineer a drive in which the Pats drove from their own 32 deep into Titans' territory. On a second-and-5 from the GBS 6, Wojcik fumbled the snap, which was recovered by John Fiorentino of GBS with 1:47 left to essentially clinch the win.

The loss dropped Stevenson to 0-2 on the season going into North Suburban Conference play.

"We can't turn the ball over and we can't allow the big play," Stevenson coach Bill Mitz said.

The Patriots did a little of both in the first two possessions of the game. A handoff from Wojcik to Haynes was fumbled on the third play from scrimmage, giving Glenbrook South the ball at the Stevenson 38. Two plays later, McGrath connected with Henderson.

Stevenson tied the game later in the quarter. The defense set the table, with lineman Kevin Barberlo's sack of McGrath, which cost Glenbrook South 19 yards. Danny Morales returned the punt 22 yards to the GBS 18. Four plays later, Philip Locker scored on a 1-yard dive.

Steven Haynes, starting at tailback for injured starter Geoffrey Matthews, ran for 114 yards on 27 carries, including 87 yards on 13 carries in the second half.

"I was pleased with the way we progressed this week," Mitz said. "It was a big improvement over last week."
