Postal food drive:

Today is the National Association of Letter Carriers and the National Rural Letter Carriers Association's 17th annual food drive, "Stamp Out Hunger." Place nonperishable food, personal care and pet food donations by your mailbox by 9 a.m., or at Blue Goose and Butera grocery stores and local post offices. Volunteers are also needed to sort donations at the St. Charles main post office. Local beneficiaries include the Salvation Army and Lazarus House. See replica Viking ship:

Friends of the Viking Ship will host a "Viking Visitor's Day" from 1 to 4 p.m. today at Good Templar Park, 528 East Side Drive, Geneva, describing the ship's voyage from Bergen, Norway, to the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition and its subsequent adventures. You'll see the stabilization work that has been done and walk up the ramp to view the inside of the ship. For more information, go to vikingship.us.

Japanese Garden open:

The Japanese Garden at Fabyan Villa Museum will be open from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, then 1 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Sundays May 17 through October. Private or group tours can be arranged during nonpublic hours. Call (630) 377-6424 or visit ppfv.org. The Fabyan Villa Museum and Japanese Garden are owned by the Forest Preserve District of Kane County and operated by Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley. Both sites are in the Fabyan Forest Preserve off Route 31, just north of Fabyan Parkway, in Geneva.

Visit Healing Gardens:

Healing Gardens, a 2-acre expanse of woodland and perennial gardens on Stone Hill Farm, 37W249 Dean St., St. Charles, will open for the season from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The gardens are open at no charge the second Sunday of each month through October. Call (630) 377-1846.

Kaneland retirement party:

The Kaneland school board will have a reception for Marilee Geene, special education director, and Tom Runty, assistant superintendent of business, at 6 p.m. Monday in the district office conference room, 47W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park.
