New library good idea for Fox Lake

An important referendum for the Fox Lake District Library will be on the ballot in February.

The Fox Lake District Library has done outstandingly well in handling finances. There has not been a referendum request since 1976. In 1978, 15,000 square feet were added, almost all with grant funds, and the main entrance was rebuilt with a partial state building grant in 1995.

The site for the new proposed library building is already owned by the library district and where the existing library sits. This district had the foresight years ago to purchase land on both sides of the existing building. It is a wonderful location, within walking distance of the high school and a middle school.

The library district serves many residents -- most of Grant Township and portions of Antioch and Burton townships. It is a community gathering place with programs and information for all ages, through books, CDs, DVDs and Internet use.

Also, through the Friends of the Library, many free programs and entertainment are offered.

To keep up with the demands of the community, this expanded library is very much needed.

The estimated cost to taxpayers is minimal - approximately $94 annually on a $250,000 home. Note, this is annually, not monthly.

Vote yes for the Fox Lake Library District referendum.
