Many good candidates vie for seat on District 23 board
Judith Zimmerman has served on the Prospect Heights Elementary District 23 school board for eight years, currently as president, and Martha Olsen for more than six. That's significant because every other board member has served less than two years. And that's significant because District 23 is going to have some tough decisions to make in the near future as it faces likely falling revenues and a new round of teacher contract negotiations. Zimmerman's and Olsen's smarts, dedication, levelheadedness and institutional knowledge will be critical.
Besides them, voters are lucky to have two other very good choices for the three board seats: Randall DeCoursey, a recent board appointee, and businessman and volunteer Leonard "Lenny" Walker.
Both are reasonable, intelligent and truly seem to want what's best for the community. Like Zimmerman and Olsen, they seem willing to tackle the tough issues and consider unpopular ideas while still considering what the public wants. DeCoursey has a slight edge because he's clearly been a fast-learner who understands the intricacies and nuances of the many school board issues.
Zimmerman, Olsen and DeCoursey are endorsed.
