Lake Zurich 1, Barrington 0
All it took was one outstanding shot. In the third overtime.
Kate Tarquino made her opportunity count on a free kick from 35 yards out, which gave 10th-seeded Lake Zurich an upset win over No. 7 Barrington 1-0 in a Class AA regional semifinal Wednesday night at Lake Zurich.
The Bears (5-7-9) next host Hersey (16-2-4) in the regional final Friday.
Tarquino connected for her third goal of the year.
"I knew I had to get it done," Tarquino said. "We've been playing for a 102 minutes. We were getting tired and needed to do something.
"I just kind of went for it."
Bears goalkeeper Maggie Eisenhuth was more than spectacular, making 8 saves in earning her 11th shutout. Eisenhuth made a few point-blank stops and had a diving stop of a header.
A lot of the credit goes to Bears' defenders Stacey Sanders, Hannah Moehling, Danielle Rowan and Megan Sue.
"I don't know how I made the stops," said Eisenhuth, a sophomore. "When you're in the game, I just get so focused and I go after everything. All these girls put their heart into it and we just don't want it to end."
And Lake Zurich coach Pete Ternes gets to extend his coaching career for another day. Ternes is leaving the game once the season ends.
"A game like this is one for the memory books," Ternes said. "I didn't want to lose a game like this and end my career.
"What a goal, what a game. You've got to give Barrington a lot of credit. They're a good team and that was a classic Lake Zurich/Barrington battle. I'm glad that were at this end of it."
Barrington (13-6-2) had to deal with the loss of forward Mary Kubiuk (12 goals and 6 assists) in the fourth minute of play. Kubiuk injured her ankle while taking a shot and didn't get back into the contest.
"The effort from both teams was incredible," Barrington coach Ryan Stengren said. "We had our chances to win it, but we didn't finish. (Lake Zurich's) keeper kept them into the game.
"Without Kubiuk, it hurt us with our possession and the ability to finish. As the game went on, we learned to play without her.
"It was a tough one to swallow, but we'll be back."
Hersey 3, Wauconda 0: Despite being the No. 3 seed in one of the toughest sectionals in the state, Hersey's girls soccer team had no cakewalk in its regional opener on Wednesday afternoon.
The Huskies needed two second-half goals to earn a 3-0 victory over No. 14 seed Wauconda in the Class AA Lake Zurich regional final of the Palatine sectional.
Hersey (16-2-4) next plays Lake Zurich in the regional final Friday at 5 p.m. at Lake Zurich.
"Every game in the playoffs is tough," Hersey coach Brad Abel said. "We're not taking anything for granted. We're happy with the result, but it wasn't our best performance.
"Wauconda (12-6-2) has some nice skills and fast forwards up top. We need to be better for Friday. Regardless if they were 18th seed or No. 1, they won games after they were seeded.
"Everyone brings their top games to the playoffs. Anything can happen in soccer and we took them seriously, like a championship game against Fremd or Barrington."
Hersey got its first goal in the 16th minute when Jackie Drees scored off a Sarah Stolzner cross.
"(Stolzner) put it right on my feet and I had a good shot," said Drees, who has 14 goals this year.
Wauconda had its best chances to even the game in the final 10 minutes of the first half and the beginning part of the second half.
Each time, though, the Bulldogs were stopped by Huskies keeper Julia Fredian (3 saves).
"We had a good run with a couple of point-blank shots up and over the top," Wauconda coach Terry Stevig said. "No idea if it would've meant something.
"Hersey is a good team, and they're the third seed. It sure wouldn't have hurt us if we did score."
The Huskies managed to score twice in the second half off set plays.
"The second half we started to pick up the intensity," Abel said. "We started to target to feet more than just chipping the ball in. We also made some adjustments and put one of our faster girls up top."
The Huskies' Kristen Gierman made it 2-0 in the 60th minute off a 30-yard free kick that skipped its way into the goal.
Hersey added an insurance goal in the 76th minute, when Eileen Zydek scored with a volleykick off the post from a Chelsea Santora corner kick.
