Addison man charged with robbing bank in Chicago

A 24-year-old Addison man is being held without bond in connection with a July 11 robbery at a bank on Chicago's far Northwest Side.

Jorge Gamboa, of 301 S. Hale St., was arrested without incident Wednesday at his home by FBI agents and Addison police, authorities said Thursday.

Gamboa is suspected of walking out of the Banco Popular branch at 7181 W. Irving Park Road in Chicago with roughly $5,600 in stolen currency, according to a federal complaint filed in U.S. District Court.

The complaint indicated Gamboa walked into the bank with a plastic bag and note announcing the robbery. FBI agents tracked the currency, which was tainted by a dye pack placed the bag, to a White Hen Pantry in Addison.

Gamboa had been passing the money for some time in the store's lottery machine, the complaint stated.

Gamboa allowed agents on Wednesday to search his home, where they said they found a box in his bedroom with red dye-stained money, the dye pack mechanism and a note that read "THIS IS A ROBBERY!! PUT MONEY IN BAG!! I HAVE A GUN, I WILL SHOOT YOU!!"

The complaint went on to state that Gamboa signed a written statement admitting to the July bank robbery.

Gamboa is being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago. He faces a possible sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

Gamboa is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court today before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Mason.
