Red light cameras aren't the enemy

I must agree with Lin Marciante-Ward's letter from March 2. The salient point that seems to be missed by much of the discussion around the red light camera at Meacham and Woodfield Road in Schaumburg is that these drivers are breaking the law.

Drivers are required to STOP at a red light, ensure both pedestrian and vehicular traffic are clear and then proceed to make a right turn on red.

Yes, we can save a few precious seconds of time by not stopping, but rolling through the red light, just like many people do at stop signs.

However, drivers you are breaking the law! We have become a society that is in too much of a hurry. We need to slow down and use those additional seconds to ensure safety before proceeding through the intersection.

I disagree with the Schaumburg turning the camera off. Obviously drivers need a reminder of what the Illinois Rules of the Road state regarding right turn on red. If it takes giving them a ticket, then maybe that is the solution to a growing problem.
