3-year-old girl killed in West Chicago train accident
A 3-year-old girl was fatally struck by a freight train while playing and trying to cross the tracks Saturday afternoon in West Chicago, police say.
The child was playing with two older children at a field around 12:18 p.m. near the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern tracks south of Ann Street, West Chicago police said.
As the southbound train neared the field, the three children tried to cross the tracks from east to west, police said. While the older children successfully crossed, the girl failed to make it, police said.
Paramedics took her to Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, where she was pronounced dead.
The train was leaving from West Chicago and had two engines, 13 loaded cars and 18 empty cars, EJ&E officials said. West Chicago police and EJ&E police are continuing to investigate.
