Clerical error causes some confusion in Naperville park board election

A published notification of this spring's Naperville park board election contained an error in listing the available seats, district officials say.

But an attorney for the district says he doesn't anticipate the clerical error will affect the April 7 election.

"This is a minor error in a notification," attorney Steve Adams said. "The candidates were responsible to know what seats and term lengths were available."

The district published a notice about the April 7 election in local newspapers, including the Daily Herald, earlier this month. The notice incorrectly stated there were five 4-year terms available. In fact there are four 4-year terms and one 2-year term.

The deadline to file nominating petitions already has passed, but possible write-in candidates have until Feb. 5 to file a notarized "Declaration of Intent." The form is available at dupagecountyelections.com.

Of the nine candidates who filed to run for a board seat, only one specified he is running for the 2-year seat - incumbent Commissioner Andrew Schaffner. If no write-in candidate emerges for the seat, he will be unopposed.

The two-year seat is needed to fill the remaining term of Charlie Brown, who resigned from the board in June. The park board appointed Gerry Heide to fill his post until the April election, but the remaining two years of the term now goes on the ballot.

Heidi has filed to run for a 4-year term along with fellow incumbent Suzanne Hart and newcomers Tim Belgio, Jim Ensign, Rich Janor, John Polich, Mike Reilly and Kirsten Young.
