Elk Grove's Lindfors commits to Wisconsin-Milwaukee
Courtney Lindfors, who helped lead Driscoll to the Class 2A state girls basketball championship last March, has a new home this winter as an Elk Grove Grenadier.
She also knows where her new home will be a year from now.
Lindfors made a verbal commitment Saturday morning to play for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Courtney, the daughter of former East Leyden (Class of 1978) and Northern Illinois basketball standout Ron Lindfors, averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Highlanders last season.
When Driscoll shut its doors following the school year, Lindfors decided to attend Elk Grove High School.
She began playing basketball at Grove Junior High in Elk Grove in seventh grade. She will be reunited with two of her former Grove teammates, Olivia Roback and Meaghan Amman, who are also seniors on this year's varsity.
The Grenadiers will have a player who knows how to win a state title as Lindfors' team went 34-1 last season.
"That state championship was amazing, probably one of the best times of my life," Courtney said. "And this (committing a Division I program) is really close to it. Things are a lot less stressful now."
Lindfors said her father and former Driscoll girls basketball coach Steve McCuiston were two of the most important people in teaching her the game.
"I wasn't doing any sports in seventh grade and my parents (Ron and Pam) told me I had to play basketball," Courtney said "I loved it right away."
Lindfors was 6-foot-2 when she started playing and now stands 6-4
Her father, who is 6-10, averaged 21 points as an all state center at Leyden. After college, he played basketball in Sweden.
Courtney's brother Jake is a 6-10 sophomore forward for the University of Albany. Her sister Amber is 6-2 seventh-grade basketball player for Grove.
Wisconsin-Milwaukee does not have any players from Illinois on its current roster and Courtney does not know of any Illinois recruits.
"I just really liked the atmosphere there," said Lindfors, who is uncertain of what she will study. "The coaches told me they want me to shoot and take people off the dribble. And that I could play at the 4 or 5 position."
At Elk Grove, she will start alongside all-area forward Ashley Capotosto, who is also being sought after by Division I programs.
"We played real well together over the summer," Courtney said. "It makes it a lot easier for me having another post like Ashley."
