Refugees not forgotten for Christmas

Burmese, Korean, Ethiopian, Somalian, Iraqi, Irani, Columbian and Vietnamese refugees who left their native lands and made their way to DuPage County were surprised and thrilled to receive personalized presents.

Wheaton's College Church held a Christmas party on Thursday, Dec. 4, for refugees participating in its English as a Second Language classes. The party included yummy Christmas treats and presents for each refugee's family based on their age and gender.

Maria Suarez, who's originally from Columbia and now lives in Wheaton, participated in the party for the first time this year.

"I like it, and I'm happy," she said. "This is a surprise."

The ESL students meet at the church year round.

"Our church wanted to find a way to connect with them," said Gail Mudra, the children's ministry assistant. "We wanted to mix with them, talk with them and find out about them."

For the fourth continuous year, volunteers prepared more than 400 gift boxes with toothpaste, toothbrushes, hats, scarves, and a toy or gift card.

"People love it, and it's always crowded," Mudra said.

Marilyn Huffman, a World Relief teacher who instructs 3-year-olds, said there are six classes for children and seven levels for adults.

"We want this to be the place where these new refugees come to and feel welcome," she said. "We help them with all of their needs."

Taleb Rhema, who left Iraq in August and moved to the area, also took part in his first party.

"Everything helps," he said. "I think this is a good program."
