Elburn man dead in snowmobile crash
A 32-year-old Elburn man died Monday at a Rockford hospital where he was being treated after a snowmobile crash in rural Kane County over the weekend, authorities said.
Matthew S. Vandenborn was legally drunk at the time of the crash, and although he was wearing a helmet, it was not properly secured, said Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fuduccia.
The accident took place around 1 p.m. Sunday on the Great Western Trail, near Route 64 and Peplow Road, said Chris McCloud, a spokesman for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
Lt. Pat Gengler, a Kane County Sheriff's spokesman, said deputies responded to the crash but have turned the investigation over to Illinois conservation police.
Vandenborn was initially taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital and then transferred to the intensive care unit at St. Anthony's Medical Center in Rockford.
Vandenborn died as a result of massive head injuries, said Fuduccia, who did not immediately know Vandenborn's blood-alcohol level.
An autopsy will not be performed. An inquest into Vandenborn's death could be held in about six weeks, Fuduccia said.
