Annual event attracts seniors; 60 exhibitors entertain and instruct

When Arlington Heights resident Joan Pece, 81, needed a new Social Security card, she stopped by the 20th Annual Senior Celebration Day at the Randhurst Shopping Center in Mount Prospect.

"The (Social Security card) I have is over 50 years old," Pece said.

She was one of hundreds of seniors who came to the event Wednesday where more than 60 exhibitors attended.

The main stage attractions began at 9:30 a.m. with the Falconaires Ballroom Dance Band. Other attractions throughout the day included an Andrews Sister act and a zumba class demonstration.

Allan Burman, a volunteer from the Wheeling Senior Center, said he spoke with seniors who wanted to learn more about computers, especially the Internet.

This will be the last year the event will be held at Randhurst, since the mall is transforming from a shopping center into a residential area, said Kim Cashmore, chairwoman for the senior celebration committee.

Next year, on May 14 the event will be held at Arlington Park in Arlington Heights.
