Briefs: Cell tower approved

A 120-foot pole will be installed on the west side of the Vernon Hills village hall, following informal approval Tuesday by the village board. Known as a mono-pole, the structure initially would house equipment by T-Mobile. As proposed, T-Mobile would install the pole and related equipment by the end of the year. The village would own the pole, and the company would lease space on it for $24,000 a year. The tower would be designed to accommodate two additional cell providers. The village also plans to place a microwave antenna on the structure to improve communications functions, such as monitoring camera systems.

Waukegan casino opponents in Gurnee

Gurnee Mayor Kristina Kovarik declined a resident's request to oppose a proposed casino in neighboring Waukegan. Kovarik said her only position is a casino should not be in Gurnee. Lori Hubbartt, a Gurnee civil service commission member and resident in the Providence Village subdivision, said a casino would have a negative effect on property values in the area where she lives near O'Plaine Road. The Waukegan proposal is for the Fountain Square development about a mile east of Providence Village. Hubbartt also voiced concern about the casino generating more traffic and crime. She told the board she's trying to get "signatures" on an online petition opposing a casino in Waukegan. Rosemont, Waukegan and Des Plaines are the three finalists for the state's 10th gambling license.
