Briefs: Youth of the Year sought

The village of Hanover Park seeks applicants for its Youth of the Year award, which comes with a $1,000 scholarship for the high school senior chosen. Applicants will be considered on the basis of several traits or accomplishments, including heroism, service to school or community, commitment to family or personal achievements. Candidates must live in Hanover Park. Applications are due Dec. 12 and must include a one-page essay by the candidate, as well as a letter of recommendation from a teacher, coach, employer or other adult, but that person cannot be a family member. Santa run coming:

Runners of all ages are invited to don a Santa suit and race a 5 kilometer race at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at South Middle School, 400 S. Highland Ave., Arlington Heights. The Arlington Heights Rotary Club is holding the first Santa Sleigh 5K Run as a fundraiser to help eradicate polio worldwide and help rebuild Memorial Park in Arlington Heights. All registered participants receive a five-piece Santa suit and goody bag filled with items from the event sponsors. The entry fee is $30 for participants age 13 and older, and $20 for participants under 13. There is a $5 charge for registering on race day. Register at www.rotaryah.org.
