Cut-A-Thon to benefit MS Society

A Roselle business wants to do more than make women beautiful this weekend. Dazzles Hair Salon and Spa wants customers to feel good on the inside, too.

In the name of two long-time clients, the owners of Dazzles are planning a Cut-A-Thon from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Sunday at the salon, 827 N. Roselle Road in Roselle.

Hair cuts begin at $15. All of the proceeds go to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Two of Dazzle's clients suffer from MS, an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system. Meghan Melone, a three-sport-senior-athlete at Conant High School in Hoffman Estates, was diagnosed as a freshman. Most women are not diagnosed until their mid-20s. Meghan has stayed involved with sports, a foreign exchange program in Costa Rica, and the National Honor Society.

Debbie Fumagalli of Hoffman Estates is a 45-year-old mother of two and sister of the owners of Dazzles, Sharon DiMaria and Diane Ironside. She was diagnosed 20 years ago and is in the secondary progressive stage of MS, unable to walk.

Half of the proceeds from the Cut-A-Thon will be donated to the Assistance Relief Fund of the National MS Society. It assists patients with care and goods as needs arise. The other half will go toward the Research Fund for patients like Meghan who are in the earlier stages of the disease.

The event also includes a silent auction and raffle with more than 30 prizes donated by local businesses.

"We just called people to ask them to donate and they said, 'Sure, no problem'," Dazzles stylist Tina Tierney said.

Raffle tickets cost $1 each or 12 for $10.

"Our goal is to reach $5,000," said Tierney. "We've already earned $1,000 from raffle tickets alone."

Prizes include donations from Lynfred Winery, Indian Lakes, Shaw's Crab House, and Eagle Ridge in Galena.
