Truck crashes through rail, rolls over on Route 53

A pickup truck ended up on its roof after the driver cut across opposing lanes of traffic and went through a guardrail Friday morning on Route 53 in Addison.

Addison fire Lt. Brock Herion said the driver was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. His condition was not immediately available, but Herion said no major injuries were apparent.

Addison police Cmdr. John Moffit confirmed the injuries were not life-threatening.

Police closed Route 53 in both directions after the accident around 9:15 a.m.; the road reopened about an hour later.

Moffitt said the driver of the Ford F150 pickup apparently hit a patch of ice on the Route 53 bridge.

He was driving south in the left lane when he struck a Mazda in the northbound left lane.

He then cut across the northbound lanes, plunged through a guardrail and fell down an embankment about three blocks south of Fullerton Avenue, Herion said.

The driver was still in the vehicle when police and firefighters arrived to find the truck on its roof, Herion said.

"He was probably 30 feet off the roadway in the embankment," Herion said. The truck came to rest next to a fence down the slope, he said.

The driver of the Mazda did not appear to have any major injuries and was not taken to the hospital, Moffitt said.
