DuPage warming centers offer refuge
Those needing an escape from the cold have several refuges available in DuPage County.
A support center for DuPage Public Action to Deliver Shelter in Wheaton extended its hours Thursday and changed protocol for the rest of the week so those fleeing the subzero temperatures have a place to go.
Normally, the center is available during the day for those who are hunting for jobs or want to learn money-management or other lifestyle skills.
"When it's this cold, anyone can come in," said Beth Epstein, director of programs for DuPage PADS. She said the priority is to make sure no one suffers from the frigid temperatures.
The center, at 705 W. Liberty Drive, also will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. Other PADS overnight shelters throughout the area still are operating under normal hours starting at 7 p.m., although they may open earlier if temperatures remain below zero.
Carol Simler, executive director of PADS, said many people in need also spend their days at public libraries and police stations when trying to escape the weather.
The Illinois Department of Human Services in Villa Park also is part of a statewide program that offers warming centers.
Anyone who needs to can sit in the building at 146 W. Roosevelt Road during business hours between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.
"It's just an additional resource available if they need somewhere to go," said Tom Green, spokesman for the department.
Employees also can offer help for those who need some place to stay after 5 p.m. For more information on warming centers and locations, visit keepwarm.illinois.gov.
