Elk Grove Democrats seeks election judges

Elk Grove Township Democrats Seek election judges for the Feb. 5 election primary.

Judges of election are responsible for the administration of election procedures in the polling place on Election Day. They are in the position of ensuring that the election process is administered fairly, honestly, accurately and in accordance with the law.

A judge must be a citizen of the United States, a resident of Cook County, and a registered voter. He or she must be able to speak, read and write the English language.

Duties include:

• Opening the polling place in the morning and closing it at night.

• Setting up election equipment.

• Providing assistance to voters.

• Signing in voters.

• Verifying voter qualifications.

• Distributing ballots/activation cards for touch-screen machines.

• Operating voting equipment.

• Filling out forms.

• Processing and transmitting votes at the end of the day.

• Certifying vote totals.

Election judges receive a total of $150 for their work. That includes $100 for working the entire election day and $50 for completing a training course prior to the election. Judges must do both.

Judges work from 5:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. on election day. Each precinct polling place is staffed with five election judges.

Elk Grove Township serves portions of Elk Grove Village, Mount Prospect, Des Plaines, Arlington Heights and Rolling Meadows.
