Dr. King's memory trashed by hauler
Apparently, our new garbage and yard waste company in Wheaton has strong environmental concerns, but is less sensitive regarding social issues. As far as I could observe, this year, the pickup schedule was the same during the week of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday as any other week. If that is true, Veolia doesn't differ from Waste Management. Both companies do not allow their drivers the opportunity to observe our newest national holiday. The Rev. Dr. Tracy Malone, senior pastor of the Gary United Methodist Church in Wheaton, spoke to this point at the DuPage County commemoration service for Dr. King last month She reminded us that Dr. King came to Memphis to support the underpaid sanitation workers of that city. Tragically, that city became the site of his assassination. Sadly, 40 years later, garbage and recycling companies are trashing Dr. King's memory by making it extremely difficult for their workers to participate in the Martin Luther King Day rallies and services.
