Barrington on the rebound
Barrington was looking to rebound from a pair of boys basketball losses last weekend to Fremd and Buffalo Grove.
And rebound is exactly what the Broncos did in Thursday night's 49-37 Mid-Suburban West victory over visiting Palatine. They backed up a strong defensive effort with advantages on the glass of 33-18 overall and 13-5 on the offensive end.
"That's awesome rebounding," Barrington coach Bryan Tucker said of not allowing one in the first half on the offensive end.
"That was a big focus of ours in practice as well," Barrington senior Owen Prunskis said of rebounding and rotating better defensively. "(Lukas) Osmundsen and (John) Schneider did a great job of boxing out.
"Every time the ball went up we knew it was going to be ours. That was our mentality the whole game."
It paid off for Prunskis (9 points, 7 rebounds) with a pair of second-quarter rebound baskets as the Broncos (5-3, 1-1) opened a 27-15 lead that never dropped below double digits.
Greg Gerrard had a game-high 14 points and 6 rebounds. Taylor Ganzer had 8 rebounds and Osmundsen had 5 rebounds off the bench.
And that didn't bode well for the Pirates (3-4, 1-1) on a night they shot just 32.5 percent from the field.
They missed 15 straight 3-pointers in between the only long-range connections by Jeremy Driggers just 17 seconds into the game and by Chris Harris with 27 seconds to play.
"I thought they just wore us out on the glass and that's a credit to them," said Palatine coach Eric Millstone, whose team was coming off wins over Hoffman Estates and Prospect last weekend. "They stayed with it and won the hustle points.
"It seemed like every loose ball they got to and every time there was a 50-50 ball off the offensive glass they got to that as well."
Mark Bennett added 10 points as Barrington also scored 21 points off Palatine's 19 turnovers.
Schneider scored 5 points after missing the last four games with an injured ankle. And the Broncos overcame not having sophomore guard Brad Zaumseil with a bone bruise on his knee.
"The fact we were able to bounce back with all of the injuries," Prunskis said, "shows the depth and our determination to fight through adversity."
