Hersey goes 3-0 at Dundee-Crown
Chalk one up for the pupil.
Hersey coach Jim Wormsley, who wrestled at Dundee-Crown for longtime Chargers' coach Al Zinke, came home and coached his team to a 45-21 win over his former coach and alma mater in a quadrangular meet held at Dundee-Crown in Carpentersville Saturday.
“It is always fun to come home.” said Wormsley, a 1987 graduate of Dundee-Crown. “We wrestle in this quadrangular every year for the competition. Dundee-Crown is always a competitive team with competitive kids. Our kids wrestled well today and we competed well today, but we have a lot of work to do when we get back to practice on Monday.”
Hersey, 17-3 in dual meets, won the meet with a perfect 3-0 record. The Huskies also crushed Foreman 78-6 and cruised past Larkin 73-6.
Against D-C, Hersey whose assistant coach is former D-C wrestler Gary Wahl won 9-of-14 matches including 4 pins and a technical fall.
Matt Gianeschi (103 pounds), Jose Serna (112), Richard Kim (135) and Hunter Rollins (152) registered pins for Hersey. Jeff Koepke (171) had a technical fall for the Huskies.
For D-C (8-3), heavyweight Raymond Griggel registered a pin while Cody Churkey (215), Chris Larroprecht (160) and Alonzo Fuller (145) won by decision.
“It is always fun to coach against Jim and Gary,” said Zinke. “They were both important wrestlers in our programs. Hersey is a very good team and we can learn from this match.”
D-C defeated Larkin 63-18 and Foreman 74-6.
Larkin bounced back from losses to D-C and Hersey by ending the day with a 44-27 win over Foreman.
The Royals got pins from Tyler Vanessen (103), Ian Keller (189), Andy Koehnke (215) and Andy Laboy (heavyweight). Josh Brooks (125) won by technical fall while Gilbert Zambrano (160) and Jack Ferron (171) won by decision.
“I am really happy with the way we wrestled in the last match,” said Larkin coach Andre Allen. “After getting beaten badly in the first two matches, our kids came back with a lot of spirit and determination. We ended the day on a positive note.”
