'Seussical' comes to life on Vernon Hills High School's stage
The stage lights will be shining brightly in the auditoriums at both Community High School District 128 schools this weekend as students in the drama departments present their fall musicals.
‘Seussical the Musical': The Vernon Hills High School Fine and Performing Arts Department and Backlight Theatre Company will stage “Seussical the Musical” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, and noon and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, at the VHHS auditorium, 145 Lakeview Parkway.
“Seussical the Musical,” with music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, is based on the works of Dr. Seuss.
It brings the tale of “Horton Hears a Who” to life and seamlessly connects characters from at least 15 other Dr. Seuss books with the help of the Cat in the Hat and young JoJo.
This whimsical show, directed by Stephanie Freichels, imparts messages about the power of imagination (“Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!,” “It's Possible”), loyalty to friends (“Alone in the Universe,” “All for You”), that one person can make a difference, and that a person's a person, no matter how small.
The cast of 40 student actors and 30 orchestra members will bring this family-friendly show to life, blending many different musical genres ranging from pop, funk and hip-hop, to lullaby, gospel and big Broadway numbers.
Some of the lead cast members include Philip Hanson as the Cat In The Hat, Olivia Candocia as JoJo, Drew Echales as Horton, Lindsey Dantes as Gertrude and Grace Ferolo as Mayzie.
Tickets cost $5 for adults, $4 for students and children.
