Blackhawks' Sharp won't dwell on success
While the Blackhawks could be without Marian Hossa for the next few weeks, they still have Patrick Sharp.
Sharp led the NHL with 9 goals going into Thursday's games but says it's way too early to envision himself challenging for the Rocket Richard Trophy, which goes to the player who leads the league in goals at the end of the season.
“It's pretty neat, but I've been around long enough to know there's a lot of hockey left and there's a couple guys in the league named Crosby, Ovechkin and Stamkos who I'm sure are going to put up a big number, so I have a long way to go,” Sharp said.
Like most goal scorers Sharp isn't dwelling on his success just as he tries not to think about it when the puck is not going in the net.
“Early on in my career I used to read a lot into it,” Sharp said. “There's no reason to get conmfortable or complacent. We've only played 11 of 82 games so there's a lot that can go wrong, but hopefully not. I'm just trying to get better every day and keep things going.”
Sharp is back at wing, having been shifted over from center for Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Kings. He'll stay at wing on Jonathan Toews' right side for tonight's game against Edmonton at the United Center.
“At center I'm moving my feet a little more, skating into pucks and not really stopping,” Sharp said. “On the wing I have to use acceleration and speed a little more.”
Campbell almost ready:
Defenseman Brian Campbell went through his first full practice Thursday, and coach Joel Quenneville was impressed by what he saw.
“He looked good today,” Quenneville said. “He had good jump and good pace to his skating and practice as well.”
It's possible Campbell could return from his sprained right knee Saturday at Minnesota or Monday at New York.
“I don't want to say a date exactly, but he's not too far away,” Quenneville said. “Hopefully with him back in the lineup we have a little more puck possession time. I think it might enhance our team game.”
Replacing Hossa:
As of Thursday night the Hawks hadn't recalled a forward from Rockford to take Marian Hossa's roster spot. It could happen today, but it won't be rookie winger Jeremy Morin, who still hasn't recovered from a minor lower body injury.
“I don't think he's ready,” Joel Quenneville said.
It's possible Quenneville could decide to use John Scott again at forward for the time being.
Viktor Stalberg skated on the first line with Jonathan Toews and Patrick Sharp at Thursday's practice with Tomas Kopecky centering the second line for Patrick Kane and Troy Brouwer.
“With Sharpie (and Toews), that pair has been good together,” Quenneville said. “I liked Kopecky at center (Wednesday), so we'll keep him there.”
