Scouting Morris at Kaneland

Game time: 7:30 p.m. today

Last year: Did not play.

Last week: Morris 15, Rochelle 8; Kaneland 30, Sycamore 13.

Outlook: Clinching at least a share of Kaneland's fifth conference football title in its 51-year history, and first since a three-way split with Geneva and Batavia in 2006, the first year of the Western Sun Conference, the Knights can look forward to the playoffs. Right? Wrong. "I don't want to hear it," Knights coach Tom Fedderly said. "I just want to prepare for this game." That is sound philosophy, not only because one-time juggernaut Morris is also a Northern Illinois Big 12 East playoff team. When a Kaneland fumble handed Sycamore a short field, the Knights found themselves trailing for the first time this season. When Sycamore looked about ready to tie the score 14-14, a Nick Michels hit and Taylor Andrews fumble recovery and 85-yard touchdown return instead put Kaneland up 20-7. Such is the margin of error in this sport, and that's why Fedderly's crew is buckling down on Morris' variety of offensive looks, from spread to I-formation to full house. Morris could be easy to root for, since it fields a "Rudy" running back Jake Ruettiger, probably as tough as any of the other Ruettigers. The Redskins also offer quarterback Austin Freeney, who can throw the ball as well as run it. Few can do that better, however, than Kaneland's Joe Camiliere, who completed 13 of 19 passes against Sycamore for an efficient 140 yards at the same time the Knights ran for 190. Returning defensive back Kyle Davidson from injury last week and getting a complete game from a nicked Andrews, Kaneland will now set about finishing its first undefeated regular season since its last state championship season, in 1998. "I just think we need to come out and be focused like we have been," Fedderly said. "What we've been telling the kids is we want to peak at the right time."
