Downtown Wheaton needs supermarket

The city of Wheaton has found itself with a unique parcel of land now that Hubble Middle School has relocated. The property is not far from downtown, but is uniquely located at the intersection of Naperville and Roosevelt Roads.

The city has an important decision to make regarding the future of the property. Attracting more business near downtown Wheaton should be one of the top priorities for the property. While at one time Costco was considering building a new store at the sight, unfortunately, it no longer is. The city should do its best to attract a similar caliber buyer for the property.

Downtown Wheaton has lacked a supermarket since Jewel pulled out a few years ago. That building and property is too small to successful as a supermarket location again. However, the old Hubble site provides the perfect location for a new grocery store to be built. The location would ensure easy access and high visibility, and it would be able to serve people around downtown Wheaton as well.

The city has a lot of options to consider when considering what to do with the property, but I hope that it can be transformed into something of practical use for the members of the community. Downtown Wheaton has lacked a supermarket for too long, and I hope that the city can offer enough incentives to make a new supermarket in that location a real possibility.
