Hinsdale S.: Why did Young practice in Burr Ridge?

Following a request by Hinsdale South High School, IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman confirmed on Wednesday that his staff will look into a November practice conducted by Whitney Young's boys basketball program at Burr Ridge Middle School.

Hickman said he has requested further information from Whitney Young about why the Chicago Public League basketball power traveled to the western suburb to work out.

“We've been asked by Hinsdale South to look into (the practice), and we've reached out to Whitney Young to see how that transpired,” Hickman said. “It would be highly unusual for a high school team from the city to practice at a suburban school that far away.”

Hinsdale South boys basketball coach Vince Doran e-mailed media members earlier this month alleging that Whitney Young practiced at Burr Ridge Middle School, an event that school officials confirmed, in an attempt to recruit basketball players whose residency feeds into Hinsdale South's district.

Doran contacted Whitney Young coach Tyrone Slaughter as well as the IHSA in hopes of resolving the matter. It's now in Hickman's hands.

“As we would for any member school, we're complying with (Hinsdale South's) request,” Hickman said. “It may or may not be a violation of our rules. I imagine it'll take a matter of a few days or weeks to sort out.”
