Huntley runs over Johnsburg
When Huntley was finally able to get the ball inside, the Red Raiders were able to put away Johnsburg.
Huntley broke the game open in the third quarter and coasted to a 73-54 win in a Fox Valley Conference boys basketball crossover in Huntley Friday night.
Justin Frederick had 19 points, 11 rebounds and 3 assists, leading a quartet of Red Raiders in double figures.
Tyler Brunschon added 16 points, Troy Miller 15 and freshman Amanze Egekeze 11 for Huntley, which won its fifth straight to start the season.
"A point of emphasis in that third quarter was getting the ball inside," said Huntley coach Marty Manning.
"I think once we did that we made a bunch of shots in a row that were within 10 feet. We really struggled from the outside tonight. Unfortunately, we didn't do that for the whole game, because it was something we talked about all week."
Mike Dombrowski almost single-handedly kept the Skyhawks in the game with a game-high 26 points.
"I thought we did a better job containing him, again for about 5 minutes in that third quarter," Manning said.
"In the first half we were a little over-aggressive and fouled him way too much."
Huntley led 35-27 at the half and only 48-37 late in the third quarter before going on an 18-9 run extending until midway through the fourth quarter.
Frederick had 15 of his points in the first half. When he cooled off after the break, first Brunschon, then Miller and Egekeze took over.
Huntley dominated the boards, with Frederick and Bryce Only (6 rebounds) leading the way to a 31-21 advantage.
Both teams shot about 47 percent from the field, but Huntley's rebounding edge and ability to take care of the basketball (only 9 turnovers) led to 19 more shots for the Red Raiders.
Mike Ward added 13 points for Johnsburg, including 3 first-half 3-pointers, and TJ Sigmund finished with 11 for the Skyhawks.
