BGHS takes a week's vacation - Homecoming Week, that is

Buffalo Grove High School's 2010 Homecoming week, "Buffalo Grove's Vacation," will take place Sunday through Saturday, Sept. 26-Oct. 2.

Student Council and "Bernie the Bison," the school mascot, have a spirited week of activities and events planned for students, staff, and alumni.

Each day the student body will wear apparel based on various vacation spots, play lunchtime games, and participate in after-school and evening activities, leading up to the traditional Homecoming coronation, football game and culminating Homecoming Dance.

Participation in Homecoming activities throughout the week will enable students to earn spirit links for their respective classes. The class with the most spirit links will be announced during the assembly on Friday and will receive a free doughnut breakfast.

Throughout Homecoming Week, spirit links and Bison T-shirts will be sold as a fundraising effort, sponsored by Student Council. The goal is to raise $2,500 to adopt a bison from the American Prairie Foundation, with the hope that Buffalo Grove's very own living "Bernie" will soon roam a large range in Montana. The school's sponsorship will continue throughout years to come. For more information on APF, visit www.americanprairie.org.

Homecoming Week gets underway on Sunday, Sept. 26, with hall decorating from 1-5 p.m. A BBQ dinner will begin at 5 p.m. for $3; free admission is offered to those participating in hall decorating. There will be an airband mixer at 6 p.m.; admission at the door is $6.

Monday, Sept. 27, Winter Vacation Day, will find students dressed in ski and snow gear. At lunch hours, a frozen T-shirt contest will take place in the cafeteria. Seniors will have an after-school activity exclusive to them. Senior Tie-Dye Night starts at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria; admission is $3. Seniors who purchase a $10 senior Homecoming T-shirt are admitted free.

Tuesday, Sept. 28, Tropical Vacation Day, will feature the wearing of Hawaiian shirts, grass skirts and appropriate beachwear. There will be a hula hoop contest in the cafeteria during lunches. From 7-9 p.m. a pool party will be held at the BGHS swimming pool. Admission is free; games will be held and food will be available for purchase.

Wednesday's Vegas Vacation Day, Sept. 29, will find the school wearing feather boas, high heels, evening wear and suits. An arm-wrestling competition will be sponsored by the Blue Crew during lunches and Homecoming King and Queen elections will take place.

National Park Vacation Day, Thursday, Sept. 30, calls for the wearing of camping, hiking, and outdoor gear. There will be a pep rally at 7 p.m. in the field house; "Bernie World," an inflatable amusement park, will also take place there until 10 p.m. for a $5 admission charge.

On Friday, Oct. 1, Bernie World Vacation Day, students will wear class colors or Homecoming T-shirts. After an absence of several years, the popular dunk tank will return, courtesy of the sophomore class. Students will have an opportunity to dunk their "favorite" teachers during lunchtime. Excitement will build all day until the long-awaited coronation/Homecoming Assembly between 7th and 8th periods in the gym.

Boys' varsity soccer will be held in the stadium at 4:30 p.m. The varsity Homecoming football game against John Hersey High School kicks off at 7:30 p.m., following a 7 p.m. pre-game introduction of the Homecoming Court.

The Homecoming Dance, held in the gymnasium from 8-11 p.m. Saturday, will be the grand finale of the week's activities.
