New kids book club forming at Cook Memorial library

A new book club for younger students in the Libertyville and Vernon Hills areas will be led by a fellow student.

Libertyville High School senior Lindsay Moulton will team with children's librarian Sue McCowin to lead The Name of This Book Club is Secret! at the Cook Memorial Public Library District's Vernon Hills branch, 701 Aspen Drive.

The program is designed for third- and fourth-graders who live in the library district and their caregivers.

Book clubs encourage kids to read, McCowin said.

"They have fun reading, and they get to talk with other kids (about reading)," she said.

The first two sessions, which will meet at 2 and 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, are already full. The next sessions will meet on Saturday, Oct. 23, and Saturday, Nov. 20, at the library.

The first book the group will discuss is "No Talking" by Andrew Clements. It's about a particularly chatty group of fifth graders who challenge each other to a 48-hour no-talking contest. The book is available for pickup at the Aspen Drive Library or the temporary library in Libertyville, 114 N. Milwaukee Ave.

McCowin said that there will be a specific activity such as a presentation, game or craft to go along with each book the group discusses.

Moulton, who also works at Cook Memorial, has been a member of a mother-daughter book club for more than eight years, a Cook Memorial news release said. Leading the book club is one way for her to share her love of books and reading with children.

The book club is a great way for parents to teach their children about the importance of reading, McCowin said.

"Kids like to do what their parents do," she said. "If mom and dad like reading, then the kids are going to like reading, too."
