'Sample the season' at CLC:Families and arts patrons are invited to "Sample the Season" at the College of Lake County's James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts' fourth annual box office event, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. today, Sept. 18. Attendees will receive 10 percent off tickets to professional touring series shows, CLC Theatre Department productions and the Second City comedy show on Oct. 9. A free drawing by a caricature artist, prizes, food, facility tours and backstage/technical hands-on opportunities and a preview of the 2010-11 professional touring series. The conservancy is a not-for-profit that preserves open space and restores natural areas. libertyvillemundeleinhistoricalsociety.com.LZ roadside safety check:A recent roadside check by the Lake Zurich Police Department and funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation resulted in 25 citations issued: four seat belt violations; 10 uninsured motor vehicles; five without a valid drivers license; one arrest for DUI and one arrest for unlawful possession of cannabis. The check occurred 10 p.m.-3 a.m. Sept. 4-5. The focus of the safety check was on enforcing violations with occupant restraints, state licensing requirements, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.Cougars fight glaucoma:Vernon Hills High School's Cougar Community 5K Classic and Health Walk is set for Oct. 3 at Big Bear Lake, Route 60 and Lakeview Parkway in Vernon Hills. Proceeds will benefit the Glaucoma Research Foundation. On-site registration and check-in are at 8:30 a.m., and the race begins at 9:30 a.m. Preregistration deadline is Sept. 23.
