'Active Parenting' classes return to Elk Grove

The fall session of the popular video discussion program, "Active Parenting Classes of Teens," will be offered to all interested Grove Junior High School 8th grade parents and Elk Grove High School parents beginning Oct. 5.

The course will meet Tuesday evenings at EGHS, 500 W. Elk Grove Blvd., Elk Grove Village from 6:30-8 p.m. on Oct. 5; Oct. 12; Oct. 19; Oct. 26; and Nov. 2 and 9.

The course will help parents talk to teens about family issues, as well as drugs, sexuality and the ever-looming threat of violence. Discipline skills that protect and guide adolescents will be discussed. More than 1,000 parents from District 214 and District 59 have benefited from Active Parenting courses over the past six years.

Parents who have completed this program have responded with positive comments, such as: "A life changing experience for my family;" "I've taken this class twice and it has made a difference in my home;" "This program has helped our family in six sessions more than therapy did in six months;" "I learned practical tools that help me out. Now I am connecting instead of disconnecting with my son;" and "This class should be mandatory for all parents."

The class is free, although you may purchase a parent guide for $13, which includes activities and guide sheets that reinforce and expand skills taught in the course.
