Lake County briefs

Guilty plea: A Wauconda man was placed on one year of probation Thursday when he admitted he paid a man he hired to work for him with bad checks. Gregory Caulill, 57, also paid the $5,539 he owed the Hoffman Estates man as part of his plea negotiation. Lake County Assistant State's Attorney George Pappas said Caulill, of the 100 block of North Avenue, hired the victim to work on several construction projects during August, 2006. Caulill gave the victim four checks totaling $5,539 to pay for the work, each of which was returned for insufficient funds. Caulill was originally charged with felony deceptive practices, but Pappas agreed to reduce the charge to misdemeanor deceptive practices in exchange for a guilty plea. Circuit Judge John Phillips also fined Caulill $250 and ordered him to perform 50 hours of public service.Memorial event planned:The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District will hold a memorial ceremony to honor the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the anniversary.
