Hersey HS community generous in drive

For the 39th year, John Hersey High School conducted their annual food drive from Nov. 15-Nov. 19.

The annual event was coordinated by the Service Over Self Club and the Student Council. Close to 2,000 students participated in the collection of cans of food and monetary donations.

Over 45,000 cans of food and $5,600 was raised this year. On Nov. 19, after an entire school effort to box up the food, 55 students delivered food to the St. Augustine's Center for American Indians in the uptown neighborhood of Chicago, as well as to Community and Economic Development Association of Cook County.

In addition, 66 food baskets and gift cards were given to Hersey families. This project would not be the success that it is without the help of the families within the Hersey community.

We would like to give special thanks to Route 12 Rental for the use of their trucks, to the Doubletree Hotel in Arlington Hts. for their help, the families of our choir department for collecting over half of our family boxes, the Hersey staff for continually embracing this project, and to all of the people of our community who so generously donated during the tag-and-bag portion of our drive.

Your generosity has helped give many families in need a very Happy Thanksgiving!
