Blackhawks goalie Huet in talks to join Swiss league

Cristobal Huet is negotiating a return to Europe and will not play in the NHL this season.

According to RDS.ca, the former Blackhawks goalie has signed a one-year contract with Fribourg-Gotteron of the Swiss National League, and the Hawks have agreed to loan his services. Several other online reports say the deal has not been finalized, however. The Swiss news site "20 Minutes Online" was the first to report the negotiations between Huet and the club.

One issue still to be resolved, according to RDS, is determining the date Huet can be re-assigned.

Either way, the loan apparently means the Blackhawks would still pay Huet's $5.625 million salary but it wouldn't count against the NHL's salary cap this season. Without the European deal and no other NHL takers, Huet would have been sent to the minors to clear the cap space.

Huet, who was 26-14-4 record with a 2.50 GAA last season with the Hawks, played four seasons in the Swiss league before joining the Los Angeles Kings in 2002.
