Schaumburg woman gets prison for dog death

Citing concern for the defendant's three young children, a judge showed compassion when he sentenced Jenell Land to 30 months of probation following her conviction for animal cruelty. Because she violated the terms, however, she will now be heading to prison.

A jury convicted the former Schaumburg resident in October of the gruesome 2008 death of her 2-year-old pit bull mix, Carmello. At the time, Cook County Circuit Court Judge Thomas Fecarotta ordered Land, 34, to spend the first year on intensive probation, which required random drug tests, community service, a curfew, psychiatric treatment and no contact with animals.

Not long after sentencing, however, Land violated the terms of her probation. According to her lawyer, Cook County Assistant Public Defender Larry Kugler, the violations related to missed curfew and marijuana. Prosecutors charged Land with the violations earlier this year and on Friday Fecarotta resentenced the former Schaumburg woman to one year in prison.

Land received credit for 150 days served.
