News media show misplaced priorities

I am writing in response to Andrew Matalas' July 31 letter. He is absolutely correct. The front page told the story: The American people have very little concern for our troops.

A million people turned out for the Hawks victory and to kiss the Stanley Cup. How many attended Memorial Day services? Some overpaid athlete gets front-page coverage, while a dead serviceman gets an column inch write-up on an inside page.

The same happens when some overpaid Hollywood floozy gets a DUI. A classic example is the round-table political discussion Sunday mornings on one of our major TV channels. The program concludes with what they call "In Memoriam" in which the current deaths of notables are reviewed. First - with eulogies, pictures, stories and anecdotes - are the politicos, Hollywood idiots, athletes and other silt of the earth types. Lastly, a picture of stacked rifles is shown very briefly with only the names of the weekly military killed in action - no photos or stories.

I must indeed be old because this just doesn't compute.
