Cops: Spring Grove woman stole roommate's raffle prize

A 27-year-old Spring Grove woman was behind bars Monday in the McHenry County jail, facing up to five years in prison on allegations she stole a $1,000 gift card her roommate won in a charity raffle.

Brittany J. Siegert, of the 38000 block of North Fifth Avenue, was charged last week with one count of felony theft stemming from the claims.

McHenry County Sheriff's police said Siegert's roommate won the Walmart gift card in an August 2009 raffle benefiting the McHenry County Youth Service Bureau. Siegert, sheriff's police said, later used the card at a Walmart store in Antioch.

She is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday for a hearing on her request that a judge lower her bond, currently set at $20,000. She has been in custody at the county jail, unable to post the $2,000 cash required to go free, since her arrest last week.

Court records show Siegert was appointed a McHenry County Public Defender to represent her, and has no prior felony or misdemeanor record in the county.

The charge against her is a Class 3 felony, punishable by a maximum two to five years in prison, or probation.
