Woman injured in Crystal Lake apartment fire

A Crystal Lake woman was injured in an apartment fire late Sunday, fire officials said.

Battalion Chief Thomas Pollnow of the Crystal Lake Fire Department said firefighters were dispatched to an apartment complex on the 400 block of West Virginia Street just before midnight Sunday in response to an alarm.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from one of the complex's two-story units. Pollnow said crews entered the apartments - located above a commercial building - and put the fire out in about 10 minutes.

The cause of the fire, believed to have originated in a bathroom, remains under investigation, Pollnow said.

One woman was taken to Centegra Hospital-Woodstock for smoke inhalation, and a second person was treated at the scene, officials said.

The fire and smoke caused about $7,500 in damage, and the unit where it originated was declared uninhabitable, Pollnow said. The business below and other apartments were not damaged.

Firefighters from Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, Huntley, Woodstock, Cary, Wonder Lake, Fox River Grove, Carpentersville and Lakewood also responded to the call.
