Detour in downtown ElginBeginning at 5 a.m. today, the intersection of Highland and Douglas avenues will be closed for street reconstruction. New concrete will be poured today and Friday with the intersection reopening Monday after asphalt has been laid over the new concrete base. Closing the intersection allows the work to be done in five days rather than four weeks, officials said. Motorists are encouraged to follow posted detour routes. Some traffic will be redirected through the Civic Center parking Lot, so the Harvest Market will be moved that day only to the former Gail Borden Library parking lot, on the southwest corner of Kimball Street and North Grove Avenue across from the Centre of Elgin. Market hours that day will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.Jamming for charityThe Cary-Grove Jaycees is organizing River Jams, and it happens from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday at Lions Park in Fox River Grove. Two bands will play Saturday and one will jam on Sunday. Both days, there will a disc jockey, a beer tent and games and activities for children. The event is a fundraiser for the Cary-Grove Jaycees.
