A Fourth of July boycott of Jewel?

As you are undoubtedly aware, downtown Wheaton now has a boarded up eyesore in its very heart, that being the once-convenient and enjoyed Jewel grocery store on East Willow.

Jewel has put such a ridiculous price tag on the property ($4 million) that would-be interested buyers have walked away. Downtown Wheaton is growing a very nice residential community and a grocery/drugstore facility would be a welcome asset to me and my neighbors.

I attended the Wheaton City Council meeting this past Monday and asked the council if there was any progress at "helping" Jewel ether redevelop or sell the property, but the council's hands are tied - it's a private matter.

Well, I suggest that the citizens of Wheaton make it a public matter. In the spirit of our nation's independence and the many celebrations in and around Wheaton; I would like to propose we all shop elsewhere than at Jewel for all of our July Fourth needs. Ready for a little public pressure, Jewel?
