Mattera's still mashing, but Lake Zurich falls short
Despite Megan Mattera's 11th home run and second in as many days, Lake Zurich's softball team lost to host Zion-Benton 3-2 on Tuesday.
That means Lake Zurich (20-10), Zion-Benton and Warren all finish in a tie for first place in the North Suburban Lake Division with 10-2 marks.
The Zee-Bees won the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Mattera, who allowed 2 earned runs in suffering the loss, finished 2-for-2 at the plate. Kelli Blume was 2-for-3 with a stolen base and an RBI for the Bears.
Warren 5, Stevenson 3: Alex Booker led off the bottom of the first inning by hitting the first pitch she saw for a home run, and the Blue Devils went on to capture the North Suburban Lake Division finale for their school-record 24th win.
Warren (24-7, 10-2), which finishes in a first-place tie with Lake Zurich and Zion-Benton, took the lead for good in the third when Nikki Ponticelli doubled home Abby Anderson (2-for-4).
Booker drove in her second run of the game in the fourth.
Blue Devils pitcher Kayla Hurd did not allow a hit until the Patriots' Heather Cohen hit a long home run with a runner on base in the seventh.
Stevenson (17-15) finishes 6-6 in NSC-Lake play.
Libertyville 8, Lake Forest 7: Calley Kaluzny went 3-for-3 with a double and 2 runs scored, as the Wildcats rallied from a 7-1 deficit to win their North Suburban Lake finale.
Mandy Vogg had the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the seventh.
Libertyville (14-17, 4-8) received 2 hits apiece from Vogg (double), Danielle Kaczmar, Athena Cocallas (RBI) and Nicole Smith (winning run).
Kaluzny threw 5 scoreless innings in relief to earn the win.
