Harper baseball team bows out in regional final
Harper College's baseball team bowed out of the regional tournament with an 5-4 loss to Waubonsee Community College on Monday.
The Chiefs scored the winning run on a single in the ninth inning, capping a tournament in which the Hawks didn't go quietly.
Their effort began Friday, with a 15-6 loss to top-seeded Joliet Junior College, which made every subsequent game in which the Hawks appeared a do-or-die proposition in the double-elimination affair.
The Hawks first defeated College of DuPage to stay alive.
On Sunday, Harper beat Rock Valley. The same day, the Hawks went on to beat Joliet 8-7 in 10 innings; in that game, Fremd product Chris Holke took a no-hitter into the eighth inning.
That put Harper into Monday's game against Waubonsee.
"The guys finished with a flurry," said Harper coach Cliff Brown, who's optimistic about year No. 2 after completing his first season as the Hawks' coach with a 12-28 record. "We've got a pretty good core coming back."
